Hello! I’m Misako Endo, manager of COCON NIKKO Kimono Rental in Nikko.
Recently, we had the pleasure of welcoming two guests from Australia—Vanya, an architect, and Hayden, an engineer. Meeting them brought a refreshing new perspective into my world. Both of them, who work at the forefront of technology and design on the vast lands of the Southern Hemisphere, were deeply moved by the historic architecture here in Nikko. It made me wonder—what kind of culture and landscapes shaped their sensibilities?
Today, I’d like to take a deeper look at the passionate country of Australia—their homeland and a place that continues to captivate travelers from around the world.
1. A Country Beyond Imagination: A Continent in Itself
If I were to describe Australia in one word, it would be scale.
With a landmass about 20 times the size of Japan, it is the only country in the world that occupies an entire continent. Within it coexist vivid red deserts, breathtakingly blue oceans, and cutting-edge modern cities.
As I spoke with Vanya and Hayden, I strongly felt that their open-minded and powerful energy was nurtured under endless horizons and vast skies.
2. From Architect Vanya’s Perspective: Sydney, a Sanctuary of Design
Just as Vanya showed deep interest in the intricate details of Nikko’s architecture, Australia is also a country that fascinates architecture enthusiasts worldwide.
The World Heritage Sydney Opera House
A symbol of Australian architecture, the Sydney Opera House is known by all. Its sail-like white structure is a masterpiece of the 20th century. Interestingly, it was once considered “impossible to build” with the technology of the time. Its completion, achieved through ingenious engineering solutions, stands as a testament to the passion of experts like Vanya and Hayden.
Sustainable Architecture
In recent years, Australia has been leading the world in environmentally conscious, sustainable architecture. As someone promoting sustainable tourism in Nikko, I find their approach deeply inspiring. Designs that maximize sunlight, recycle rainwater, and harmonize nature with urban life represent the beauty of the next generation.

3. From Engineer Hayden’s Perspective: Technology in Harmony with Nature
Just as Hayden was fascinated by the structural beauty of kimono, Australia continuously explores how to merge the immense power of nature with advanced technology.
The Great Barrier Reef and Environmental Engineering
The Great Barrier Reef, the world’s largest coral reef system, is so vast it can even be seen from space. To protect this ecosystem, Australian engineers employ cutting-edge marine and environmental technologies.
Preserving beauty requires precision and innovation. The craftsmanship that protects Nikko’s historical structures and the engineering spirit of people like Hayden share the same core philosophy: protecting what matters and passing it on to future generations.
Infrastructure Across Vast Lands
From endless highways cutting through deserts to water systems supporting expansive farmlands, Australian engineering constantly faces the challenge of overcoming harsh natural conditions to create prosperity. Behind Hayden’s gentle smile lies a powerful professionalism shaped by these challenges.

4. The Spirit of “No Worries” and Coffee Culture
When interacting with Australians, you often hear the phrase, “No worries!”
This isn’t just a phrase—it’s a way of life.
“No matter what happens, it’ll be okay. Let’s enjoy the moment.”
This positive philosophy resonates beautifully with the immersive hospitality that COCON NIKKO strives to offer.
A World-Class Coffee Culture
Australia is also famous for its café culture. Cities like Melbourne and Sydney are said to have some of the best coffee in the world.
People start their day at their favorite café, chatting with baristas while enjoying a cup of flat white.
Vanya and Hayden also mentioned how they wanted a good coffee before exploring Nikko. Their appreciation for small, everyday joys shapes their rich and warm personalities.
5. A Multicultural Society: Diversity Creating Innovation
Australia is a multicultural nation where people from all over the world come together.
Italian, Greek, Chinese, Japanese, and many other communities coexist, respecting each other’s cultures while creating a new “Australian style.”
This is perhaps why Vanya and Hayden didn’t simply see kimono as something foreign, but rather embraced it with deep respect—as a new form of structural beauty.
6. What Connects Nikko and Australia
Australia is home to sacred sites like Uluru (Ayers Rock), revered for generations by Indigenous Aboriginal people.
The belief that spirits reside in rocks and trees closely resembles Japan’s spiritual traditions, such as mountain worship and the idea of countless deities residing in nature.
When Vanya paused to admire the carvings of Nikko Toshogu Shrine, and Hayden observed the structure of Shinkyo Bridge, perhaps they felt the same reverence they experience in their homeland.
7. What I Learned from Vanya and Hayden
They shared a message with me:
“Thanks to the beautiful outfits, it became a truly unforgettable day.”
These words meant more to me than any award.
For professionals who understand true craftsmanship—an architect and an engineer—to recognize our kimono and service as genuine hospitality is an honor beyond measure.
Experiencing the spirit of Australia—free, powerful, and embracing diversity—has strengthened my determination to share the beauty of Nikko with the world through kimono.
In Closing: Bringing New Winds to Nikko
Australia is a land overflowing with endless possibilities and warmth.
If you ever travel there, you’ll surely hear someone say, “No worries!”
And when people from that wonderful country come to Nikko, experience Japanese beauty, and leave with smiles—
Being a bridge between these worlds is both my pride and COCON NIKKO’s mission.
Vanya, Hayden—
It brings me great joy to share the beauty of your homeland in this way.
One day, I hope to visit Australia myself and see the buildings you design and the technologies you support.
Until then, here in Nikko,
we will continue to welcome new stories from around the world with the finest kimono and heartfelt hospitality.
