A complete guide to enjoying Nikko’s breathtaking scenery because you’re traveling by car—introducing the ultimate kimono drive date!
—A private space just for two, for a carefree kimono journey—
Hello! We’re Misa Endo and Runa Kodaira, managers of Nikko Kimono Rental COCON NIKKO.
Recently, we’ve seen a big increase in a particular type of visitor.
Yes… couples and married pairs arriving by car—their own or a rental!
“We want to wear kimono and then drive straight up to Oku-Nikko!”
“We’d love to enjoy a drive date, just the two of us, while admiring the scenery!”
We hear these requests all the time.
And it makes total sense—
In a car, heavy bags aren’t a problem, the heater keeps you warm in winter, and best of all, you can move at your pace.
But at the same time, we often hear concerns such as:
“Is it safe to drive in kimono?”
“Won’t the obi get crushed or come loose?”
“Can you even press the pedals in zori sandals?”
Rest assured.
COCON NIKKO is here to answer all your questions as kimono-driving beginners!
This guide covers professional tips for driving safely and comfortably in kimono, plus exclusive scenic routes you can only enjoy by car in Nikko.
**CHAPTER 1 — All Your Questions Answered! How to Perfect “Driving in Kimono”
— The 3 Golden Rules from the Pros**
First, the conclusion:
“You can drive in kimono! And it’s incredibly fun.”
However, sitting in the driver’s seat the same way you would in Western clothing may cause the kimono to loosen—or even create a dangerous situation.
Here are the three golden rules for driving beautifully and safely.
Rule 1: Change into Sneakers or Driving Shoes!
This is non-negotiable.
Kimono zori and geta are supported only by the thong strap, making them unstable and dangerous for pedal control. (It may even violate traffic laws.)
Solution A: Change shoes only inside the car
Wear your usual sneakers or flat shoes while driving, then switch to zori once you reach your destination.
→ The safest and most reliable option.
Solution B: Coordinate with boots from the start
If you choose our popular retro-modern kimono + boots style, you can drive as is!
Boots stabilize the ankles, keep you warm in winter, and look chic—truly a triple-win.
Rule 2: Manage Your Sleeves for Smooth Steering
Long kimono sleeves are elegant, but they often catch on the steering wheel, gear lever, or door handles.
Solution: Use a kimono clip (or even a laundry pin)!
Lightly gather both sleeves and clip them near your lap or obi when driving.
This frees your arm movement and keeps the sleeves clean.
Bonus:
If your partner in the passenger seat says,
“Let me clip your sleeves for you,”
your hearts may just grow a little closer.♡
Rule 3: Protect Your Obi with a Cushion
Kimono obi knots protrude at the back. Sitting too deeply in the seat may crush the knot—or hurt your back.
Solution: Place a small cushion behind your lower back.
Put a small cushion or rolled towel between your back and the seat to prevent pressure on the obi and help maintain good posture.
Slightly reclining the seat back also helps.
**CHAPTER 2 — Why a Car Date?
4 Reasons Kimono Drive Dates Shine in Nikko**
“Public transport is nice… but a car is unbeatable.”
Here’s why traveling by car elevates your kimono date:
1. A Private Space for Just the Two of You
A girlfriend or wife in kimono looks even more adorable.
In the privacy of a car, you can compliment each other without worrying about others.
Play your favorite music and enjoy your own world.
2. Weather-Proof and Warm — The Ultimate Fortress
Winter in Nikko is cold, with sudden snow or rain.
But inside a heated car, no worry about freezing during transit.
Get dressed at COCON NIKKO and head straight to the scenic spots—door to door.
3. Your Range Expands — Travel Deep into Oku-Nikko
Buses require checking timetables, but cars mean freedom.
Go beyond the World Heritage area to Lake Chuzenji or Senjogahara, even in kimono.
4. No Worries About Luggage — Buy All the Souvenirs You Want
Kimono bags are small, but cars solve everything.
Store souvenirs, shoes, coats—anything—so you can explore hands-free.

CHAPTER 4 — Essential Tips for Driving & Parking in Nikko (Plus Winter Precautions)
Parking Tips
The World Heritage area gets crowded in peak seasons.
• Toshogu Shrine Large Parking — famous but often full
• Nikko Municipal West-Sando Parking (1 & 2) — more spaces, good access from COCON NIKKO
• Shinkyo Area — several coin parking lots but fill quickly
COCON NIKKO does not have its own parking, but we guide you to nearby coin lots when you book.
Winter Driving Rules (December–March)
Oku-Nikko often has ice and snow.
• Studless tires are mandatory.
Driving with normal tires is extremely dangerous.
• When renting a car, always request “winter tires equipped.”
• Do not force yourself to drive uphill if snow is heavy.
Switch to sightseeing around the World Heritage area instead.
